from Gaya, Bihar.
His story is the unsung love story of the 21st century . Shahjahan created the Taj Mahal with the help of over 20,000 artisans and the celebrated monument of love took 20 years in the making. Dashrath Manjhi's labour of love for his wife saw him cut through a rock mountain all alone with just a chisel and a hammer for 22 years to create a path way- now a road use by thousands every day.
It all started , when his wife slipped on the rock and hit herself, and bled to death from lack of medical care in 1959. The nearest town with a doctor was 70 km away and could be accessed only by traveling around the hills, or along a un-motorable pass through the hills. Manjhi took it upon himself to find a solution by single handedly working through the mountain.
He took on this massive task as his purpose of life and his expression
of love for his wife. 22 years of hard work , bore fruit when he reduced the
distance between Atri and Wazirganj in Gaya from
55 to 15 kilometres.
This incredible man's herculean effort comes to the movies this
Friday ,August 21, through the biopic " Manjhi"
I salute the spirit of Dasarath Manjhi!
